“RT” vs “via”. Round 1.

January 13, 2009

Tweetie uses the “via” syntax when re-posting tweets.

The primary rational for the “via” syntax was that it’s simpler to understand. If you’re used to seeing “RT” all over the place, it makes sense, obviously. But if you’re new to Twitter, you have absolutely no clue what “RT” means.

At the cost of two extra characters, “via” is self-explanatory. I get the impression that these two opposing standards are still duking it out. I chose “via” because it makes more sense. If someone can present [real] proof that “RT” has become the “standard” of Twitter, I will honor that and update Tweetie.

Standardization is key. I’d prefer if “via” became standard because it’s nicer, but would be more than happy to switch to “RT”… if, and ONLY if it becomes the standard.
